Refill Scheme coming to Ashford

January 30, 2019 by Bethersden Parish Council

2019 has been officially deemed the ‘Year of the Environment’ or the ‘Year of Green Action’ by DEFRA and central government.  K.C.C is leading on a year-long events plan, with each month having some sort of event/campaign/initiative.

There’s a big plastic/waste reduction campaign scheduled for summer. Part of this campaign is having the Refill scheme implemented in Ashford. Refill, if you’ve not heard of it, is a nationwide scheme providing a network of points offering the general public free tap water.  The aim is to reduce the number of single-use plastic bottles bought, reduce litter of single-use plastic bottles and increase the availability of drinking water. The public can find where has signed up to the scheme through an a Refill app on their phone or by seeing the Refill sticker in the business windows.  https://refill.org.uk/

The more people we can get involved, the better the outcome will be and the more impact it will have. Therefore they are looking for volunteers who are willing to help in this project.  It will essentially consist of an initial meeting and then a series of ‘action days’ (probably 2 or 3) to canvass business in the borough and persuade them to join the fight. These action days will happen between March and June.

If you are interested in helping out or know of anyone who would be interested please contact Amy Casey, Waste & Recycling Education Officer at amy.casey@ashford.gov.uk by Monday 18th February.
